Obituary

HALLOWELL - Muriel Auclair Howe, 81, of Hallowell died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, surrounded by her loving husband, family, friends, and the caring staff of MaineGeneral Medical Center. Muriel 'Chalky' Auclair Howe was born in Middleton, Conn., on July 9, 1929, grew up in Augusta, and graduated from Cony High School. She married Charles 'Bud' Howe in 1948. She worked at JC Penney, Hudson Pulp and Paper, and New England Telephone Company before raising four children. Chalky enjoyed her home, family, and gardening. She had the kindest, caring soul, always putting others first. Her optimistic outlook on life and her strength in dealing with life's challenges were incredible. She knew how to comfort others in need with a quiet, gentle, caring presence. She made us all laugh with her funny little songs. Her warm, soft smile, with twinkling eyes, lit up the room. We're so grateful to have been blessed with her in our lives and we will miss her so very much. Muriel was predeceased by her father, Leo R. Auclair and his wife, Bertha; her mother, Marie Yvette Deroshier, and her sister, Elizabeth Rand. Chalky is survived by her husband, Charles M. Howe Jr. of Hallowell; her son, Charles Michael Howe and Rose Fontana of Augusta; three daughters, Elizabeth Beardsley and her husband, Anthony, of Surry, Cheryl Howe and her friend, Lorie Johnson, of Wiscasset, Deborah Murphy and her husband, Maynard Murphy II, of Cape Elizabeth; one sister, Beverly Wilson and John Gumz of Bath; two brothers, L. Richard Auclair of Naples and David Auclair and his wife, Gale, of Winthrop; one brother-in-law, Richard Rand and his wife, Patricia, of Saco; eight beautiful grandchildren and five sweet great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved very much. A private family gathering will be held at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Augusta. Those who desire may make donations in Muriel's memory to the American Diabetes Association at P.O. Box 10310, Portland, ME 04104. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.khrfuneralhomes.com.
