Obituary

AUGUSTA ? Muriel Anne McAllister of Augusta died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation, Graybirch Drive in Augusta. She was born in Augusta, the daughter of Orrin and Beulah (Ware) McAllister. She was educated in Augusta and Gorham schools. Muriel received her bachelor's and master's degrees and 30 additional advanced credits at the University of Maine at Orono. She also did graduate work at Hillyer, University of Connecticut and Columbia Teachers College. Muriel's jobs included working at Gorham Teacher's College, elementary supervisor at the state Department of Education, teaching in Groton and West Hartford, Conn., and then the Augusta school system until her retirement. Ms. McAllister was a member of many organizations in her lifetime, including American Association of University Women, Order of Eastern Star, National Education Association, Maine Teachers Association, Kennebec Retired Teachers, Maine Retired Teachers, Maine Association of Retirees, Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Teachers, Women's Legislative Council, Maine Old Cemetery Association, University of Maine Alumni Association, Maine Historical Society, Maine Genealogical Society, Augusta Nature Club, Saint Andrews Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Friends of Fort Western and was in 'Who's Who in American Education.' Muriel attended Penney Memorial United Baptist Church. She is survived by her sister, Doris W. McAllister, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins and a half-uncle, Donald Ware. There will be no visiting hours or funeral. Memorial donations may be made to the Cony High School Scholarship Fund, Cony High School, Augusta 04330 or the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suit 300, Topsham 04086 or the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham Mass. 01701-4688. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, Augusta.
