Obituary

AUGUSTA - Norma Margaret (Smellie) Gerrard, 68, formerly of Mount Vernon Avenue, died peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, April 3, 2006, at Augusta Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Madison on July 16, 1937, the daughter of James Norman and Clarissa Grace (Smith) Smellie. Raised in Anson, Norma graduated from Madison Memorial High School in 1955. After graduation, she moved to Augusta to work for the state. She also was employed as a bartender at the Hotel Arnold and, after furthering her education at the Kennebec Valley Community College, became employed as a clerk for the Internal Revenue Service. Norma's greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren. 'Mama G' enjoyed opening her home to many kids in the neighborhood and was always ready to lend a hand, ear or heart to anyone. She also enjoyed plants, shopping, family occasions and gab sessions. Norma was predeceased by her father, James; her mother, Clarissa; her 'dad,' Ralph L. Paine; a daughter, Deborah Ann Gerrard; a grandson, Shawn Allen Gerrard; and a brother, R. Linwood Paine. She is survived by her ex-husband, Martin Gerrard, of Gardiner; five children, Darrell and his fiance?, Melanie Bridges, of Augusta, Danal and his wife, Robin, of Whitefield, Diana Tardiff of Bath, Deana Tardiff and her fianc?, Dewayne Gould, of South China, and Darcie Verrill and her husband, Ernest, of Augusta; three sisters, Nancy G. Smellie of Anson, Susan Paine of Haltom City, Texas, and Joan Paine Steele and her husband, Schuyler, of Anson; a brother, Charles Paine and his wife, Mary, of Anson; a half-brother, Larry Lynn Goodine, of North Yarmouth; a half-sister, Linda Hines, of Fremont, Calif.; her grandchildren, Kellie, Amanda and her husband, Christopher, Richie, Danielle, Eric, Zack, Josh, Mitch, DJ and Brian Jhon; her great-granddaughter, Alisa; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and special longtime friends. She will also be missed by Jamie, Cass, Shelley, Elizabeth, Sophia, Casey, Rani, Erin and Kari. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta. A celebration of Norma's life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Cross Hill Cemetery in Vassalboro at a later date. Norma's family would like to thank the entire staff of caregivers at Augusta Rehabilitation Center for the compassion and care extended to Norma and her family over the course of her stay at their facility.
