FARMINGDALE ? Norma M. Hilton, 78, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Robinson's Health Care Facility in Gardiner. She was born in Dover Foxcroft on Nov. 6, 1924, the daughter of Harold and Bessie (Saulmer) McDermott. Norma's mother died shortly after her birth. The parents she knew and was raised by were Martin and Effie Hill. She was a graduate of Sangerville High School. In her early years, Norma was a homemaker. After her children were grown, she was employed in various departments by the State of Maine, retiring after 30 years at age 65. She was a beloved, longtime member of the Wayside Chapel in West Gardiner. Norma loved her cats. She was very artistically gifted and enjoyed oil painting, crocheting, macrame, sewing, beading and various other crafts. A very active and giving person to so many, Norma's biggest gift was her kidney, which she donated to her daughter, Ruth. Her family and those closest to her will always remember Norma as being there for them in every way and she will be deeply missed by them all. Her husband Orman H. Hilton and her sister, Virginia, predeceased Norma. She is survived by her son Martin Butler and his wife, Martha, of West Gardiner; three daughters, Ruth Cottle and husband, Russell, of Farmingdale, Elizabeth Hilton of Greenfield, Mass., and Kimberly Perkins and husband, Dana, of Farmingdale; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Fred Benner, from the Wayside Chapel, officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Litchfield Plain Cemetery, Litchfield. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Wayside Chapel, c/o Fred Benner, 270 Maple St., Farmingdale 04344.
