SCARBOROUGH ? Patricia Anita Thaanum Mazzacane, 69, of Scarborough and formerly of Winthrop, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, after a brave battle with cancer. She was born in Winthrop on Nov. 22, 1933, the daughter of the late Peter and Alma (Wright) Thaanum. Pat graduated from Winthrop High School, class of 1951, and from Central Maine General Nursing School, class of 1954. She worked as a Registered Nurse at the VA Hospital at Togus, after which she performed private duty in the Portland area. Pat devoted her life to caring for others as a nurse and as a mother. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Mario G. Mazzacane. Pat will be sadly missed by her daughters, Carol Hamel of Maine, Nancy (Hamel) Leistensnider of Indiana, Lauri (Hamel) Ayers and her husband, Mike, of Missouri, Cindi (Hamel) Depinto and her husband, Daniel, of Montana, and Jodi (Smith) Frei and her husband, Jim, of Vermont; her brother, James C. Thaanum, of North Carolina; and her grandchildren, Michelle and Jeffrey Hamel, Erin, Peter, and Michael Leistensnider, Stephanie and Gregory Ayers, Olivia and Lily Depinto, and Alexander Frei. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A celebration of Pat's life will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Taigen Joos officiating. Graveside committal prayers will follow at noon at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta, where Pat will lie to rest next to her husband, Marty.
