Obituary

Mt. Vernon- Paul Leroy Whittier, 91, passed away peacefully at his home after a long battle with cancer on March 23, 2025, with his wife by his side. Paul was born in Farmington, Maine on January 4, 1934, the son of Fred Whittier and Gladys Schultz Rackliff. He attended schools in Farmington. He married Elizabeth (Betty Ladd) on August 23, 1952. Paul started his career as a salesman for Steego Auto Parts for 35 years, in Augusta, Maine. Paul enjoyed working in his garden, going to dances with friends, and camping. He was a past master member of Vernon Valley Lodge AFAM#99, a member of the Good Sam Club, Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Capitol Area Wheels and Downeaster's camping groups and a selectman for the Town of Mt. Vernon for seven years. Paul was predeceased by his grandson Anthony Diotaiuto, his mother and father, 2 brothers, Fred and Stanley, and two sisters, Maxine and Ida. He is survived by his wife Betty of 72 years, his five children, Kenneth form Sidney, Charlene, Darlene and Marlene from Florida, and Gordon from Mt. Vernon. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Paul was fortunate to have hospice care in which they gave him great care. Paul's visitation will be held on Saturday April 5 from 1-2PM with a Masonic service starting at 2PM then funeral service immediately following at Roberts Funeral Home ,62 Bowdoin St. Winthrop. A reception will follow the funeral service at Mt. Vernon Community Center, 2 North Road, Mt. Vernon. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 168 Leighton Road, Augusta, Maine 04330. Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, Maine.
