RANDOLPH-Penelope Ann (Lewis) Whiddon, 48, of Randolph, died unexpectedly in Randolph, Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001. Born in Fulton, N.Y., Sept. 4, 1953, she was a daughter of Betty Lewis-Johnston and Robert F. Lewis. Throughout her life, she traveled and lived in many places, including New York City; Breckenridge, Colo.; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Florida; and Maine. She had been a chef on private yachts in the Caribbean, a homesteader in Colorado, and a cab driver in New York City. At one time, she ran her own international relations business in New York City and Puerto Rico. She was, in addition, a registered nurse in Florida for several years, before ill health caused her to retire. Penny loved a challenge and a party. She was feisty, free-spirited and hard-headed as a mountain goat. She was completely lovable and she struck fear into the hearts of anyone who ever offered bad service. Sharp-tongued and brilliant, she proved that one does not need wealth to have good taste. She was a lifelong equestrienne, especially fond of Arabian horses. Animals were her passion and she raised or kept all kinds of dogs, from Scottish deerhounds to Chihuahuas. Penny had a deep, in unconventional, spirituality. She loved antiques, classic movies, and above all, her mother, Betty; daughter, Salem; and her longtime true love, Dennis. She is survived by her mother, Betty Lewis-Johnston, of Florida; her daughter, Salem Whiddon, of Hollis; her sister, Michelle, and the Rev. C. Thomas Farrar, of Richmond; her lover and friend, Dennis D'Antonio, of Florida; her maternal aunt, Roberta Knox, and husband, George, of Florida; nieces Sharon Clayton, of Florida, and Amity Stoddard, of Bar Harbor; nephews George Knox IV, of Florida, and George Stoddard, of San Francisco; and four great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at Christ Church Episcopal, near the Common, Gardiner. A second memorial service will be held in Florida later in the month, with interment in Maine at a later date.
