Obituary

TURNER - Rebecca Myers, 71, passed away peacefully April 2 at her home on North Parish Road, Turner, Maine, surrounded by friends and family and precious dogs and cats. A Minnesotan by birth, Becky lived the second half of her life in Maine, where she established Turner Veterinary Service (TVS) more than 30 years ago. She was a beloved Mom, sister, aunt, neighbor, friend, doctor and colleague, and will be sorely missed by many. Rebecca is best known as the pioneering doctor who co-founded Turner Veterinary Service with Dr. Cady Barns during a time when few women were in the veterinary field, and even fewer were large animal vets. Until she sold TVS to Dr. Nancy Derocher in 2017, Dr. Becky spent most of her days driving her vet truck from farm to farm, making scheduled and emergency calls. She was a much-loved and depended-upon source of help for farmers, treating both their food animals and their pets. She earned her undergraduate and DVM degrees from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Growing up on a family farm near Gully, Minnesota, Becky was immediately drawn to the outdoors. When a hospice nurse recently asked where she was raised, Becky answered, "Outdoors." Her horse, Zipper, was one of her best childhood friends, as was a fun-loving girl from a neighboring farm, Amy Davids. Along with cherished Maine and New York friends, Amy stayed by Becky's side throughout her life's journey. Rebecca and Amy graduated from Gonvick High School in 1973, and in 2023 helped organize a 50th class reunion which was attended by every classmate, another achievement that made Becky both proud and happy. Since she sold her practice nearly ten years ago, Becky has kept busy with projects large and small, including buying a house in Leeds and renovating it with a good friend. Becky counted this "flip house" as one of her favorite achievements, her largest adventure among many creative hands-on projects. She also had time to enjoy the outdoors more than ever — deer hunting, feeding birds and bird watching, gardening, woods walking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, and camping at bluegrass festivals, often with her cherished companion Skidder, a chocolate lab. Recently Dr. Becky returned to TVS, doing small animal surgeries one day a week until cancer prevented her from continuing the work that she loved. Becky developed her lifelong affection for farmers and music from her father, Clarence Myers. She played the saxophone, which was also Clarence's instrument, while in high school, and also played guitar and sang with Amy and friends throughout her life. While living in Turner and practicing as a vet, she played in a bluegrass jam on Thursday evenings, performing occasionally with The Girl Brothers and other local bands. Of all that she achieved, Rebecca was most proud and happy about being her son Joe's Mom. She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Evelyn Myers, her brothers Tim and Allan Gale Myers, and Tim's infant son, Aaron. Becky is survived by her son Joe Roebuck; Tim's sons Nolan and Sherlin Myers and their grandmother, Irene Wishard; and by her sister Colleen Myers, Colleen's husband Paul Ledman, nephew Leo Ledman, niece Clara Ledman, and several great nieces and nephews. Rebecca chose a private green burial in the Baldwin Hills Conservation Cemetery. Her family and friends will host a Celebration of Life gathering on a date to be decided. Becky asked that anyone wishing to honor her memory with a gift might consider contributing to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 159 Sapsucker Woods Road, Ithaca, NY 14850 cornellbirds@cornell.edu.
