Robert W. Bitz - Augusta, Maine formerly of Walpole, Massachusetts and Hamden, Connecticut – joined the love of his life Dorothy Bitz on December 20, 2025, at the age of 92 at his home in Augusta, Maine. He was born on June 26, 1933, to Annie (MacKenzie) Bitz, and William Bitz. He joined the United States Army from May 21, 1953, to May 12, 1955. When he returned home, he met Dorothy Mehegan Bitz, and he married the love of his life, on December 20, 1958. He became a Certified Public Account on June 21, 1960, and made friends with all of his co-workers, at American Girl, Sandler, Hudson Lock, York Dental, etc. He was the amazing father to three sons and a daughter. His heart was so large that he not only provided a loving and supporting home to his own child but also provided a loving and supporting home to many foster children, several of whom he remains in close contact, Wendy Arnold and Mary Wrenn. He was a father who instilled responsibility and fun like only a great man can do. Raising his family with many camping trips to North Conway, New Hampshire. This is when the true man could be seen, enjoying his time with his family. As his children grew and moved away, he and Dorothy moved to Hamden, Connecticut to live close to their son, William Bitz, his wife, Dolores Bitz and his Granddaughter, Vernoica Bitz Andrulat, until Dorothy's death on May 23, 2003. He remained residing with William, Dolores and Veronica until he moved to Augusta, Maine in 2020 to live with his daughter, Cathleen Bitz Cookson and her husband, Kevin Cookson, to live close to his grandson, Joshua Bitz, his wife, Amanda Clark, and his great grandchildren, Colby Bitz and Laney Bitz. While living in Maine, he would enjoy "game night" on Saturday night with Kerry Cookson and his wife Linda, Gene Cookson and his wife Michelle, Michele Cookson and Debra Cote. He is survived by his children, William Bitz, and his wife Dolores, of Rockwall, Texas, Robert Bitz, of Ball Ground, Georgia, Brian Bitz, and his wife, Ellen Bitz of Bridgewater, Massachusetts and Cathleen Cookson and her husband Kevin of Augusta, Maine; his grandchildren, Veronica Andrulat and her husband Alec, of Rockwall, Texas, grandchildren, Christina Roland and her husband Eric of Talking Rock, Georgia, Joshua Bitz and his wife Amanda of Pittsfield, Maine, and Jesse Bitz of Lawton, Oklahoma; and great grandchildren, Elisha Jones and her husband Luke of Talking Rock, Georgia, Nick Roland of Talking Rock, Georgia, Colby Bitz of Pittsfield, Maine and Laney Bitz of Pittsfield, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Annie (MacKenzie) Bitz, DOD 08/26/1988, William Bitz, DOD 12/21/1967 and his wife, Dorothy (Mehegan) Bitz DOD May 23, 2003. Visiting hours will take place at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church Street, Augusta, Maine from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The funeral mass will be at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 75 Northern Avenue, Augusta, Maine at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, with the burial to follow.
