AUGUSTA - Robert "Bob" S. McCarthy, 90, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2024, at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta, with his loving family at his side. Bob was born in New Sharon on August 27, 1933, to the late Joseph and Eva (Campbell) McCarthy.
He graduated from New Sharon High School and attended the University of Maine at Orono for a brief period. After college Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country for 22 years, retiring in 1975. During his time in the Air Force Bob was a special agent assigned to the Office of Special Investigations. After retirement from the Air Force Bob served the citizens of the State of Maine by working for the Attorney General's office as a criminal investigator.
Bob had many loves and passions throughout his multiple careers. While in the Air Force he was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts of America, serving many different roles. When stationed in Goose Bay Labrador Bob was a scout leader and had to contend with nine months of snow every year. Leading the kids into summer camp in June often involved shoveling snow from the tent platforms, breaking up ice in the lake so the Scouts could work on merit badges and contending with massive hordes of black flies. Bob was responsible for setting up a brand-new Scout Troop on Westbrook Air Force Base in Massachusetts and was involved in scouting on his assignment in Charlestown, Indianna. At one point in time Bob was also involved in the YMCA Indian Guides. He always ensured his boys were involved in all these past times.
Once retired from the Air Force, Bob, and his wife Ann discovered a deeper passion for travel. Over a period of twenty years the two of them took many trips in their motor home throughout Canada and much of the United States. Bob also served as President of a local Good Sams camping club for many years. Bob was a long-time member of Masonic Lodge #123 in New Sharon and had a love and appreciation for dogs.
After retiring from the Attorney General's office Bob discovered another passion – volunteering. Along with wife Ann, he volunteered a countless number of hours at the Maine General Hospital and the Harold Alfond Cancer Center in Augusta, earning his 30-year pin for the last 30 years of service. The two of them also volunteered many, many hours to the Special Olympics - rain or shine.
In addition to his loving wife Ann, who he was married to for sixty-six years, Bob is survived by his brother Wayne McCarthy (and wife Marie) of New Sharon; three sons - son Pat McCarthy (and wife Jane) of Hollis, son Mark McCarthy of Augusta, and son Brent McCarthy (and wife Jen) of Winthrop; grandsons Sean McCarthy (and wife Shelbi and soon to be born great grandchild), Brian McCarthy (and partner Tim) and Daniel McCarthy.
Bob is predeceased by parents Joseph and Eva McCarthy, sister Priscilla Worster, and in-laws Lloyd and Louise Hoxie.
Bob's visitation will be held on Monday June 24, from 5-7PM at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church Street Augusta. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. A private burial will be held at a later date.
