AUGUSTA - Robert 'Bob' Redman, of Augusta, died Monday, May 2, 2011, at MaineGeneral Medical Center at the age of 84. Bob was born in Augusta on Nov. 26, 1926, the son of John Everett and Neva (Crooks) Redman. Growing up, he lived and then summered in Boothbay Harbor with his family. He loved the Maine coast throughout his life and Boothbay Harbor was his favorite town. He graduated from Cony High School in the class of 1944, where he was very active in athletics. He was captain of the baseball team, co-captain of track and played basketball and football, earning a total of 11 varsity letters. He won the state championship in the 880-yard competition and the Kennebec Valley championship in the 440 and the 880. Following graduation, he joined the Navy from 1944 to 1946, where he was aboard the USS Burdo in the Pacific Theater. Also aboard the Burdo with Bob was the underwater demolition team, today known as the Navy SEALS. He was present in the area of Sasebo, Japan, after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Following his duty in the Pacific, Bob was sponsored by U.S. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith and accepted into NAPS (Naval Academy Preparatory School), at Bainbridge, Md., which he attended for six months before the war ended and he returned to Maine. He continued to serve his country in the Naval Reserves. In 1946 he attended the University of Maine, where he was co-captain of the freshman football team and was a member of the Phi Mu Delta house. In the 1940s, he played semi-professional football with the Augusta Millionaires, semi-professional basketball with the Harvey Dynamos and semi-professional baseball. Bob married Priscilla Shields in 1948 and they had a wonderful life together for more than 62 years. He was first and foremost, a very devoted husband and father and proud of his family. He had a love of listening to the big band music of the 1940s. During the summer, he could be found on the golf course with members of his foursome, John, Jim and Dick. Post retirement, Bob and Priscilla traveled the East Coast playing golf in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Florida and other stops along the way. He was active in community organizations, including the Augusta Lodge 141, F&AM, American Legion Post 6 of Hallowell (Goodrich-Caldwell), president of the Central Maine Board of Approved Basketball Officials, commissioner of the Augusta Sanitary District, treasurer of the Maine Association of Retirees (MAR), president of Central Maine Seniors Golf and a 50 year member of Masons (Bethlehem Lodge 35). He was a member of the Augusta Country Club for more than 50 years and also served there as treasurer and on the Board of Governors. He was a manager and coach of Augusta East Little League, Babe Ruth Baseball and Pee Wee Basketball. In 1960, he was manager of the Augusta East Little League team that won the Maine Championship and advanced to the New England tournament. From 1953 until his retirement in 1988, Bob worked for the State Department of Audit. For 20 of those years, he worked for the Municipal Bureau auditing municipalities, schools, counties and utilities through the state. In 1981, he became Deputy State Auditor. In 1987, he was recognized by the 113th Legislature for 'his wise and valued counsel' for his work with the Legislative Committee on local and county government. He is survived by his loving wife, Priscilla Redman; his son, John Robert Redman M.D., daughter-in-law Joan Redman, granddaughters Allison Redman and Elizabeth Redman of Mullica Hill, N.J.; daughter Maureen Redman Rodrigue, son-in-law Paul Rodrigue of Augusta, granddaughter Michelle Rodrigue and her partner David Jackson and great-granddaughter Chloe Renee Jackson of Port St. Lucie, Fla., granddaughter Katharin 'Katie' Rodrigue of Augusta and her fianc?, Richard South, of Wath upon Dearne, England; daughter Susan Redman Giroux, son-in-law Tedd Giroux and grandson Christopher Redman Giroux, of Augusta; brother Edward Redman and sister-in-law Louise Redman of Augusta; special family member Sybil Huard of Augusta; as well as multiple nieces and nephews, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents; and two sisters, Johnna Redman Wood and Alyce Redman Burns. Relatives and friends may visit at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, Friday, May 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, May 7, at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday, May 10, at noon.
