Obituary

SULLIVAN - Robert W. Simpson, 88, a longtime resident of Augusta, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, in Hancock. He was born in Augusta on April 17, 1922, the son of Walworth and Bernice (Leighton) Simpson. Bob graduated in 1940 from Cony High School, where he was captain of the basketball team. He attended and later graduated from Bowdoin College, where he was a member of the first basketball team, and also played football and baseball. His education was interrupted by service in the Navy in World War II, in which he was a lieutenant and captained a Landing Craft Infantry (LCI) in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. Among his duties was transporting Charles DeGaulle from North Africa on his return to France. He returned from the war to finish his education at Bowdoin. He then went to work for Wyman & Simpson Construction Inc. of Augusta, a construction firm started by his father. Bob became owner and president of Wyman and Simpson, retiring in 1991. Bob was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Augusta Country Club. He was Maine State Amateur runner-up in 1963 and was club champion several times. He was also a former member of the American Legion post in Augusta. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Simpson; a brother, Paul Simpson; and a stepdaughter, Sara Brouillard. He is survived by his wife, Susanna Simpson of Sullivan; three sons, Dan Simpson of Chelsea, Tom Simpson and his wife, Andrea, of Buffalo Junction, Va., and Bill Simpson of Portland; two grandchildren, Shane Simpson of New Gloucester and Libby Hooker of Otisfield; five great-grandchildren; his stepchildren, Robert Petterson of Vero Beach, Fla., Susanna Petterson of Sausalito, Calif., Sabrina Babcock of Newburyport, Mass., Stacia Coughlin of Hibbing, Minn., Henry Petterson of Topanga Canyon, Calif., and Saskia Amaro of Santa Cruz, Calif.; 12 stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at noon on Saturday, Oct. 9, in Forest Grove Cemetery, Augusta. Bob will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends. Following the graveside service, a celebration of his life will be held starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Augusta Country Club. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330.
