WINTHROP ? Robert Stanley Smiley, 84, of Winthrop, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Nicholson's Long Term Care in Winthrop. He was born in Augusta, Feb. 24, 1918, the son of Charles and Flora (Jaquith) Smiley. He grew up in the Augusta area and attended Cony High School. Robert joined the Army Air Corps in World War II. He served as an airplane armorer stationed in India. His battles and campaigns included Burma, China, Japan, India and Europe. He was discharged in 1945. After the war, Robert worked at Edwards Manufacturing until his retirement. Mr. Smiley and his wife, Barbara (Cunningham) celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June. Robert was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Alvin Smiley and two sisters, Mildred Cooper and Phyllis Gannon Smith. He is survived by his wife and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, Augusta.
