Obituary

WINTHROP - Ruby Lucille (Thompson) Baker, 'Ma, Mother, Mom, Gram, Grammy B.,' died October 7, 2014, at her home in Winthrop with her family by her side. Ruby was born in Readfield on July 26, 1927, to Charles and Mary (Sanborn) Thompson. Ruby married Kay R. Baker in August of 1949 and they raised five children. Ruby's greatest joys were her family, animals, and her work of 43 years in the human services field. She also enjoyed being a foster mother to children and teenagers who needed a home. Ruby did volunteer work for the Special Olympics, Winthrop Soup Kitchen, Sunday school at the Winthrop United Methodist Church, an orphanage in Virginia, the American Legion in Virginia and the Alfred W. Maxwell, Jr. American Legion Post 40 in Winthrop where she was a member for 44 years. She also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary and The Golden Star Auxiliary. Ruby is predeceased by her husband Kay; mother and father; and sister Pearl Tyler. Ruby will be deeply missed by her five children, Charles (Dickie) Baker and Mary Lynda Pratt, both of Winthrop, Ray Scott Baker, of Texas, Kathy Lee Baker and Susan Pearle Tibbetts, both of Winthrop; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends may visit Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop. A graveside celebration of Ruby's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, at Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane, Winthrop. The family requests that donations be made in Ruby's memory to MaineGeneral Home Care and Hospice, P O Box 828, Waterville, ME 04903-0828.
