WINTHROP ? Rudolph G. 'Rudy' Staples, 65, died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, surrounded by his loving family. Rudy was born May 6, 1937, in Augusta, the son of Edwin and Effie (Crocker) Staples, and he attended Augusta schools. He worked at Livermore Shoe for 10 years and then at Carleton Woolen Mill for 25 years, until his retirement in 2000. Rudy was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He also managed a softball team in the Augusta area in the 1950s and continued to play into the 1980s. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes with his brothers and was a fan of harness racing. Rudy married Judith Ann Libby, Jan. 24, 1959, in Wayne. He was predeceased by his sister, Emily Lewis, and his brother, Burton Staples. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Judy; a son, John Staples and his fiancee, Roxanne Poisson, of Brunswick, Ga.; three daughters, Donna Whaley and her husband, Steve, of East Winthrop, Norma Ayoob of Augusta and JoAnn Johnson and her companion, Eric, of Lisbon; former daughter-in-law, Terri Staples; two brothers, Linwood Staples of Farmingdale and Arnold Staples and his wife, Ruthann, of Winthrop; sisters, Louise Giroux and her husband, Don, of Augusta, and Cora Staples of Farmingdale; a brother-in-law, Joe Lewis of Hallowell; 15 beautiful grandchildren, Michael O'Leary, Deanna Swallow, Thomas Johnson Jr., Katie Patrick, Jennifer Johnson, Nikki Johnson, Evan Clement, Skyler Whaley, Corey Staples, George Clement Jr., Lacey Clement, Serena Whaley, Chris Staples, Natalie Johnson and Samantha Johnson. Rudy will always be remembered by his four angels, Joann, Norma, Donna and Terri. Relatives and friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Monday, June 17, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 18.
