Obituary

READFIELD ~ Russell passed from this life to the next in the early hours of September 21, 2015, quietly and unexpectedly. He was born October 20, 1927 in South Wallingford, VT to Philip Harris Walters Sr. and Katharine Gertrude Sawyer. Russell was the sixth of eight children, three of which survive him. Russell graduated from Kents Hill School and went on to work his way through college at University Of Maine at Orono. After graduating, he eventually moved to California and settled at first in Cloverdale where a brother lived, then in San Francisco where he worked as an engineer for California Division of Highways until 1973. In 1963 he married the love of his life, Joy L. Wright. They lived in Saratogo, Santa Clara, and San Bruno, California before moving back to Maine. He and Joy had three children, two of which survive him. Daughter, Jeanne Marie, predeceased him in 1971. After moving back to Maine in 1973, Russ worked for the State Of Maine at Camp Keyes until his retirement in 1998. He always enjoyed gardening and farming. When he first moved back to Maine he raised beef cattle on a small scale, cut his own hay and tended to a large garden. Some of what he grew in his garden was donated to the Mount Vernon Food Bank each year. He was a hard worker and passed on those practices to his children and to others as well. Russ was a member of the Readfield United Methodist Church after moving back to Readfield and served with Joy as Custodian for several years after retiring from the State Of Maine. He was weakened physically by two heart attacks but was still working on increasing his strength and endurance. He will be missed so very much but the love he gave will never be forgotten. He was also predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Marjorie Griffiths Fellows of California and Mary Louise Folsom of Newbury Park, CA; and two brothers, Donn Stetson Walters of Cloverdale, CA and Preston Harwood Walters of Newbury Park, CA. He is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Joy Walters, of Readfield; son Michael D. of Gardiner; daughter Laura S. of Red Bank, NJ; sister K. Pauline Walters of Newbury Park, CA; two brothers, Philip H. Walters Jr. of Wilton and Roger S. Walters of Spokane, WA; as well as many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Russell’s Life will be held Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Readfield United Methodist Church. A private committal service will be at Readfield Corner Cemetery on the Church Road in Readfield. Memorial donations may be made to Readfield United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 286, Kents Hill, ME 04349. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, One Church St., Augusta, where memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at www.khrfuneralhomes.com
