MANCHESTER ? Ryan Garrett Cottrell, 24, of Ingraham Street, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Augusta, Dec. 17, 1977, the son of Stephen and Marsha (Black) Cottrell. Ryan graduated from Maranacook High School, class of 1996, and then attended Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, Nev. Most recently, he was a student at Kennebec Valley Technical College. Ryan served in the Army for two years with the 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry Airborne. He was stationed at Fort Polk, La. Ryan loved life and lived every moment to its fullest. He enjoyed playing golf and hiking and was an avid skier. He was a caring and sensitive man who relished spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his parents of Manchester; his paternal grandmother, Marjorie Cottrell of Monmouth; maternal grandmother Maxine Black of Belfast; a sister, Raegen Cottrell of New Braunfels, Texas; the love of his life, Rachel Levine of Portland; his aunts and uncles, Barbara Cottrell and her husband, Lee Schepps, of Dallas, Gregory Black and his wife, Judi, of Kennebunk, and Denis Black and his wife, Pauline, of Rockland; and his cousins, Philip Schepps, Benjamin Schepps, Dustin Black, Dori Black, Brennan Black and Bryce Black. Visiting hours will be held 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary of The Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. The Rev. Dr. Peter Misner will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cottrell-Taylor Scholarship Fund, H.L. Cottrell School, Monmouth 04259 or the Neurosurgery Foundation, 55 Claverick St., Providence, R.I. 02903.
