Obituary

WINTHROP -- Sandy A. Johnston, 86, died at his home in Winthrop on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005. Sandy was born Jan. 12, 1919, in Patten, the son of Joseph Claude and Susan Damarice (Emerson) Johnston. He was educated in the schools of Lincoln and Monmouth. In 1941, he married Eleanor Lorena Edwards in Monmouth. Sandy saw World War II service in the Navy in the South Pacific, from 1944 to 1946. He was employed in a variety of occupations, including many years at Carleton Woolen Mill in Winthrop. In the 1930s, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Bridgton area. In his youth, Sandy played baseball in high school and pitched for the Monmouth town team. He enjoyed spending time on the water, sailing on lakes and the ocean, and tinkering on his boats in the off season. He was an excellent ice skater. He was a skilled metal worker, spending countless hours fabricating machines and gadgets in his shop. He was fascinated with tools and with the workings of mechanical things. Sandy had a lifelong interest in boxing. In recent years he enjoyed going 'lawn-saling' and shopping at Marden's. He made many friends at Togus Veterans Hospital during his visits there. He was predeceased by his parents; three children, Kent Johnston, Jan Johnston, and D. D. Drury; infant great-granddaughter Amanda Jean Turner; a brother, Delmont Johnston; and a sister, Jessie Albert. Sandy leaves his wife of 63 years, Eleanor L. Johnston, of Winthrop; two sons, Terry Johnston and his wife, Linda, of Monmouth and Del Johnston of Winthrop; six grandchildren, Lorrane Drury of Winthrop, Teresa Beaulieu of Litchfield, Daniel Johnston of Chile, Christopher Johnston and Carrie Johnston, both of Winthrop, and Romunda Jordan of Columbia Falls; two great-grandchildren, Catherine and Amanda Farrington of Readfield; two sisters, Sally Smith of Lincoln and Joyce Beaulieu of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may visit from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a celebration of Sandy's life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the spring in Monmouth Ridge Cemetery.
