Obituary

Greene, ME. – Scott Robert Bates was born May 26, 1958, in Lewiston, Maine. The son of Robert L. Bates (1921-2003) and Lillian I. Bates (1926-2008) of Winthrop. He pursued his passions until the day he died, November 29, 2022. Scott lived in Greene, Maine with his loving wife Megan. Scott started his work career just after High School at the University of Maine's Agriculture Research Station, Highmoor Farm where he worked for 20 years. He started as a Farm Tech and was later promoted to Assistant Farm Manager. After spending a short time at Monmouth Public Works, he began at Lewiston Public Works where he served as a Landscape Tree Worker in the Tree and Open Spaces Division for nearly 20 years. Scott attended Monmouth Academy from 1972-1976 where he excelled in Basketball and was awarded Outstanding Achievement in Athletics. In his early twenties he accumulated various firearms and shooting became his lifelong passion. He participated and won many competitions including 'the Best Damn Shot in Maine'(1988 and 1990), Capital City Police Combat Match in 1991 and several competitions at the Monmouth Fish & Game where he was a 'Life Time Member' and was generous in his service. In earlier years he enjoyed hunting and fishing which he loved sharing with his son, Chad Bates. His second passion was his love for gardening: planning, planting and harvesting. This resulted in many hours in the kitchen, canning vegetables and complementary meats. His friends and family were blessed with his baked beans, chili, apple pie, baked bread and dinner rolls. His wife of 33 years, never worried about preparing supper. Scott understood the importance of physical fitness. His heart-related diagnosis did not deter his weight training routine and outdoor walks in the beautiful outdoors of Greene and Monmouth. Many late afternoons enjoying a good rye whiskey, or a Moosehead Beer was a guilty pleasure he included in his whole foods diet. Predeceased by his parents Scott (Scotty) leaves behind a host of loved ones, wife Megan Bates of Greene, their Son, Chad Bates of Greene, Brother Guy L. Bates and his companion, Kathy Perkins of Wayne, Maine, Brother, Richard L. Bates and wife Sharon of Norfolk, Massachusetts, and many beautiful nieces, their families and fun-loving cousins.
