WAYNE - Dr. Alexander Frothingham 'Sandy' Smith of Wayne died peacefully but suddenly in the home of his daughter, Deborah Large, on Thursday, June 30, 2005, at the age of 86. Sandy was born in Springfield, Mass., on June 14, 1919, the son of Raymond and Louise (McClean) Smith. A graduate of Williams College, he worked two summers at Androscoggin Boys Camp in Wayne, where he met his soon-to-be wife after walking too close to her house one summer's eve. During World War II, he was a second lieutenant in the Army, stationed in England, working on the development of early radar systems in a world where minutes of advantage saved countless lives. Following the war, he began a distinguished teaching career, starting as a public school teacher and then spending most of his years as a professor of psychology at Southern Connecticut State University. In the late 1980s, he and his wife retired to Wayne. In their marriage they traveled all over the world, mountain climbing and camping on five continents, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro at age 65. They also trekked in the Annapurna Range in Nepal, walked on the Great Wall of China and hiked the Milford Track in New Zealand at 70. At 75, he still made his annual hike on his favorite mountain, into Chimney Pond on Mount Katahdin. He was an active Eagle Scout, a 70-year ham radio operator (W1IJW) and a devoted Red Sox fan who was more than thrilled that he got to see them finally win the World Series. His greatest joys were being with his wife and his family, enjoying wonderful meals and exciting conversations with friends old and new. Sandy was known for his gentle, warm and loving nature, and his wonderful one-liners. He lived his life quietly with honor and dignity, setting a great example for his children, grandchildren and others. A beloved father, husband, papa and grandpapa, he will be missed dearly by those who knew him. He was predeceased by Jean Burr Smith, his beloved wife of 57 years. He is survived by son Jonathan and his wife, Liz, and children Simon and Anneliese, of Bethel; daughter Dr. Judith Lucarelli and her husband, John, and their daughter, Omm, of Frankfort, Ky.; a son, David and his wife, Karen, and their children Fiori, Alex and Ian of Cary, N.C.; and a daughter, Deborah Large and her husband, Gordon, and their children Cassandra, Aaron and Tyler of Mount Vernon; as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at noon Sunday at Wayne Community Church with the Rev. Kyung-hee Sa officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.
