Obituary

AUGUSTA ~ Stanley Hawes Sr. passed away peacefully on July 23, 2016 at MGMC in Augusta with his family by his side. Stan was born on August 9, 1931 to Clayton and Mary Hawes (Szady) in Augusta. Stan worked for the US Postal service in the days when mail came by train. He worked for Haskell Transportation as well as a local masonry company and was a long time carrier for the Kennebec Journal. In his younger days he worked at a bowling alley where he became a proficient bowler. He loved Country music and was a champion bean picker in 1948 always wearing a straw hat, which earned him the nickname Huck Finn. He is predeceased by his parents; wife, Blanche; his brother, Clayton; his sister, Grace; and niece, Barbara. He is survived by his brother Clarence Hawes and his wife Faye of Saco; his children, Mary Lou, Willie, Jerry Ann, William, Stanley Jr., Steve; three grandchildren; John, Jacob, Grace; one great grandchild; one uncle; several nieces, nephew and many cousins. The family wishes to thank the staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center for their loving care of Stan during his stay, and for making sure his country classic station played day and night. 'The song is ended, but the melody lingers on...' A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the Riverside Cemetery, Bangor Street, Augusta. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta.
