Stanton was born on March 23, 1933, in Belfast, Maine, the son of C. Maynard and Christabelle Fuller Whitaker. He grew up on the family farm in Windsor and graduated from Cony High School in 1951. Before beginning his career with Central Maine Power Company in 1953, he worked on the farm and drove logging and gravel trucks. Stanton worked for Central Maine Power for 38 years before retiring in 1991, and he returned temporarily to help during the ice storm of 1998.

On June 18, 1955, Stanton married his beloved wife, Donna M. Cooper. They shared 58 wonderful years together until her passing in 2014.

Stanton enjoyed working with his hands and was always willing to lend his skills to friends and family through construction projects, mowing, and other acts of service. He generously gave of his time to help at Christian Life Fellowship Church in Chelsea and the Washington Advent Christian Campground, where he was a member and regular attendee. He also was a member of the Eastern Star, and the Capital Area Wheels chapter of Good Sam as he loved spending time camping with friends and family.

Stanton was predeceased by his beloved wife, Donna; his brother, Jerry Whitaker; his sister, Priscilla Clark; his toddler grandson, Tyler Allen; and his baby great-granddaughter, Brooke Whitaker.

He is survived by his son, David Whitaker, and his wife, Jennifer, of Presque Isle; and his two daughters, Diane Smith, and her husband, Scott, of Hudson, NH, and Pamela Allen, and her husband, Curt, of Hallowell.

He is also survived by his ten grandchildren: Greg Whitaker and his wife, Erica, of Mapleton; Joel Whitaker and his wife, Elizabeth, of Presque Isle; Aaron Whitaker and his wife, Chelsea, of Mapleton; Timothy Smith and his wife Marie of Hudson, NH; Rebecca Johansen and her husband, Austin, of Tyngsboro, MA; Michael Smith and his wife, Alicia, of Hudson, NH; Chad Allen and his wife, Clarissa, of Bedford, NH; Laura Brooks and her husband, Joshua, of Waterville; Emily Allen of Winthrop; and Katie Allen of Winthrop. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy.

He leaves behind his prized 26-year-old green GMC pickup truck.

The family extends its sincere gratitude to MaineGeneral Medical Center & Hospice, Gray Birch Rehab, and especially, the home care team, who provided compassionate care and support to Stanton and his family over the past couple of weeks.
