AUGUSTA- Sterling E Smith, 56 of Augusta passed away unexpectedly at his home on Monday October 2, 2023.
Sterling was born on August 6, 1967, to Harry B. Smith and Dorine V Smith (Burnham) in Augusta Maine. He attended schools locally and graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1986. After graduation he went to work at Knapp Shoe factory for several years. After leaving Knapp, he then went to work for himself logging with his oxen. He also worked part time for a local cattle dealer doing farm work and helping truck cattle.
In 1986 Sterling met Susan Raymond and they got married July 24, 1988. They had two children together, Andrew and Michael and divorced in 1991. Sterling enjoyed working his oxen everyday regardless if it was in the woods hauling logs to sell, hauling the next year's firewood or even just exercising them as they pulled a skidder tire in an effort to prepare for the upcoming summer fairs where he and his son Andrew entered many ox pulling competitions. Right up until his last day, there weren't many ox pull events he missed. He really enjoyed hunting coon and rabbit with his uncle Gus, his brothers and son Andrew. He loved his family, and his extended fair family and was well known for giving great hugs!!
Sterling is predeceased by his parents Harry and Dorine Smith, sister June Brown, son Michael Smith, ex wife Susan Raymond and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his son Andrew Smith of Auburn, two brothers Sam Smith, John Smith and John's wife Geneva Smith all of Augusta, his sister Jean Davis and her husband Carl of Sabattus plus several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A private family gathering will be held Sunday, October 22nd. In the spring, a graveside service at Monmouth Ridge Cemetery followed by a celebration of Sterlings life for friends and family will be announced. Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to Sterling's son, Andrew Smith 272 Main St Apt. G03 Auburn, Me 04210 to help pay for his father's funeral expenses.
