Obituary

Susan Baldwin (Shaw) Lockhart, aged 64, passed away at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, ME, on April 19, 2023. She was born October 1, 1958, in West Chester, PA, the daughter of Samuel and Beverly Shaw. Susan's soul was steady. On any given morning, Susan could be found reading her Bible and praying. Communion with God defined her life. Her faith and her prayers spoke volumes to her children in their formative and adult years. The object of her faith—namely, Jesus Christ—is what she most hoped that others would remember in considering her life. Susan loved her family—the one she was born into, the one she married into, and those who married into hers. She was focused on her family and served them in particular ways that spoke to her mind for the practical and useful. She was mindful of others' practical needs and sought to contribute to the meeting of those needs according to her abilities and means. Susan loved nature and this had a lasting effect on her children, as well. Whether playing and spending time in the field and trails near their house or at the family camp on Parker Pond in Fayette, ME, Susan loved being in nature during the various seasons and in the water in the summer. Susan grew up in Downingtown, PA, where she loved her time riding horses and participating in 4-H. She elected to spend her senior year of high school at the Sterling Institute, a private / boarding school in Craftsbury Common, VT, where she completed her academic studies while gaining other experiences and skills, including survival skills and experience with horses. Following high school, Susan studied at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI). During her time as a student there, she was strategically and deliberately introduced to Byron Lockhart by Byron's sister, Judy. After their first date, Byron knew he would marry Susan. Byron and Susan were married on April 14, 1979. They purchased their first home on Dewberry Drive in Presque Isle and there they raised their two children, Kristin (Lockhart) Middleton and Ryan Lockhart. Susan paused her collegiate studies and opened and operated a day care during the early years of her marriage and parenthood. Once both Kristin and Ryan were in school, Susan resumed her studies at UMPI in pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. During this time, she taught ballet and gymnastics part-time. While juggling household responsibilities, two children, work, and school, Susan's steadfastness was on display for those who had the opportunity to observe it. Her stress never landed on another individual. Her voice never raised. She embodied patience. In 1992, Susan graduated from UMPI with Magna Cum Laude honors. Susan went on to work with students in Caribou, ME, for twenty years that were spread across Hilltop School, Teague Park School, and Caribou Middle School. Susan served in a number of roles, including classroom teaching for Preschool and Kindergarten, respectively, as well as Title 1 Literacy Teacher, and Reading Recovery Teacher. Susan's career wrapped up at Mount Vernon Elementary School where she served in a Title 1 role for six years. Eleven years after obtaining her bachelor's degree, Susan completed her graduate degree (M.Ed Literacy, University of Maine at Orono) with Summa Cum Laude honors. While living in Presque Isle, Susan was an active participant of the Presque Isle Wesleyan Church (now Framework Church) and helped with Sunday School and contributed musically with her guitar and singing. She also served regularly at the Oxbow Congregational Church in Oxbow, ME, as part of a rotation of individuals who helped lead services. In 2013, Susan and Byron relocated to their retirement home in Vienna, ME. The new home surrounded them with a sanctuary of trees that Susan enjoyed walking through, provided ample space inside and outside for visiting children and grandchildren, and placed them in close proximity to Susan's sisters and mother, as well as the family camp on Parker Pond (the setting for decades of family memories). Susan enjoyed swimming, playing Spades with family, playing the guitar (singing around a campfire), visiting Bar Harbor, gardening, sewing, and she (always learning new practical skills) picked up maple sugaring and weaving late in life. On May 3, 2019, Susan was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. The next four years were full of their share of challenges and repeated drives to Scarborough for chemotherapy and other appointments. Despite all of this, Susan's steady demeanor carried on and she was able to, as her husband noted, grasp from life what it has to offer and be grateful for it. Susan was predeceased by her mother, Beverly Burton Shaw, her father, Samuel Pettee Shaw, and her brother, Verne Richard Shaw. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Byron, and her sisters, Kathy Ann Stern (and husband Ben), Bonnie Shaw Linder (and husband Stephen), her sister-in-law, Jennifer Lynn Shaw, a daughter, Kristin (Lockhart) Middleton (and husband Luke), and son, Ryan Lockhart (and wife Bailly). Susan is also survived by five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Susan's favorite Scripture passage was Psalm 91:1, which reads, "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty." Today, Susan dwells with her God in paradise (Luke 23:43). There will not be a public memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parker Pond Association, 321 Tower Road, Vienna, ME 04360 or to Raising Readers, P.O.
