Obituary

WINTHROP - Terry B. Roberts, 73 of Winthrop and Southport, left this world and began his new journey on Monday, April 26, 2010. Terry was born July 10, 1936, in Augusta, the son of Carleton and Lucille (Perry) Roberts. He graduated from Winthrop High School in 1954, the University of Maine Orono in 1958, and the New England Institute of Mortuary Science in 1959. On Feb. 8, 1960, he married Janice LaPrise of Gardner, Mass., and they were blessed with 50 wonderful years together. He was a member and training officer in the Maine National Guard for 10 years and was an Air Force Reserve Officer. A licensed funeral service practitioner since 1960, he worked in the family business along side his father and uncle, Carlton and Douglass Roberts, until their retirements. In the early years, in addition to Roberts Funeral Home, they operated an ambulance service and a propane gas business. In July 1984, Terry's vision to bring together the talents and resources of Roberts Funeral Home and Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Homes became a reality. It was the first merger of its kind in the state of Maine, combining two fifth generation family owned and operated funeral homes. Terry was a very active member of his community, serving on several town of Winthrop committees including the Recreation Committee. He was on the original committees that formed the Winthrop Rescue Service and the Winthrop Little League and was deputy sexton of the town of Winthrop Cemeteries for several years. He was a life member of the Winthrop Fire Department, a life member and past president of the Winthrop Lions Club, past treasurer and trustee of the Charles M. Bailey Public Library, a past member and past treasurer of Kennebec Valley Medical Center Board of Directors, past member of Bank of Maine Winthrop Board, and a corporator and honorary member of Kennebec Savings Bank, and a former board member of Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce. He was a life member of the Maine Funeral Director's Association, a member of the National Funeral Director's Association, and a former member of the State of Maine Board of Funeral Service. After their retirement, Terry and Janice moved to Boothbay Harbor, and most recently to Southport. After enjoying many winters at Sugarloaf, they wintered in the Sarasota, Fla., area (Siesta Key and Nokomis) for several years. Terry was a member of the Carousel Yacht Club and the Down East Yacht Club in Boothbay Harbor. For several years he was involved with the Carousel Music Dinner Theater in Boothbay Harbor, attending the annual spring auditions in New York City to select the cast and enjoying Broadway shows in the evenings. He was an avid sports fan, enthusiastically following the Winthrop and Boothbay sports teams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, white water canoeing, downhill skiing, boating, and music, especially big band and Dixieland jazz. For many years he was a Registered Maine Guide, leading his family and friends on unforgettable adventures all over Maine. He had a great love for the north Maine woods and the family camp at North East Carry, Moosehead Lake. In 2005, with his grandson as his guide, he experienced his last wild whitewater adventure and his final encounter with the 'River Gods.' He will be remembered for his compassion, generosity, integrity, work ethic, and his respect for and love of life. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 50 years, Janice; his children, Lynn Roberts Reed and her husband, Steve, of Winthrop, and Leon Roberts and his fianc?e, Kimberly Clendening, of Winthrop, and Valerie Starkie and her husband, Michael, of Winterville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jada Clark and her husband, Jeremy, of Readfield, Ryan Reed of Gunnison, Colo., and Marissa and Malori Starkie, both of Winterville; a great-grandson, Jack Henry Clark of Readfield; two aunts and several cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 2 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 30, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. At his request, following the service at church, all are invited to join in a Louisiana Jazz Funeral Procession from the main gate at Glenside Cemetery on Turkey Lane to his grave. The celebration of his life will continue at the Alfred Maxwell Jr. American Legion Post No. 40 in Winthrop. In honor of his love of music and theatre, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Winthrop Performing Arts Center, c/o Elaine Morse, 17A Highland Ave., Winthrop, ME 04364. Funds received will be used to support programs for the community. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.khrfuneral homes.com.
