AUGUSTA - Vivian Fern Russell, 93, of Augusta, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a short illness. She was born in South Portland, Oct. 6, 1908, the daughter of Carl T. and Daisy H. Russell. From 1920, she attended Augusta schools, graduating from Cony High School in 1925. She graduated from Colby College, Waterville, in 1931 with a bachelor of arts degree. She was awarded a master of arts degree in English by Bates College, Lewiston, in 1946. She was a voice student of Mary Berry Manter for more than seven years. Miss Russell taught for 38 years in public and private schools in Maine, New York and Massachusetts. The last 24 years of her career (1944-68) she was on the faculty of Kents Hill School, a preparatory school in Kents Hill, as head of the English Department, drama director and for 17 years, dean of women. After retirement in 1968, she took up winter residence in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., where she was active in the Community Church as a choir member and soloist, and for 10 years as program director of the Women’s Association. She was a member of the local Garden and Civic Club. For more than 50 years she was a summer resident, with her parents, on Lake Cobbosseecontee, at Welch’s Point, East Winthrop. In family tradition, she was active in the cause of temperance, serving as president of the Augusta chapter of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, and as curator of Neal Dow Memorial, Portland, and a member of its governing board. From 1967-1971, she was in charge of the restoration of the Dow Mansion in its conversion to Neal Dow Memorial and headquarters of the Maine Woman’s Christian Temperance Union. Miss Russell had been a member, of the Green Street United Methodist Church, Augusta, since 1926, of the Cecilia Club, and for several years, was an officer in the Maine Federation of Music Clubs. She is survived by cousins, Barbara Frost Lemieux, of Lewiston, Helen Frost McKenney, of Waterville, Marie Frost Hunter, of San Antonio, Texas, William M. Willard, of South Portland, and other relatives. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Torsey Memorial Church, Route 17, Kents Hill.
