HALLOWELL - Walter 'Cal' Mansfield, 76, died on Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, following a courageous battle with cancer. Walter was born at Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh on Nov. 25, 1928. He grew up in the Johnstown, Pa., area and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1950. He joined General Electric Co. in 1950 and tested jet engines during the Korean War. In 1954, Walter was drafted into the Army, served two years in the Army Chemical Corps and was honorably discharged. Afterward, he moved to Fort Wayne, Ind., with his wife, Ann, and returned to work at General Electric. During his 38 years of service at General Electric, Walter became a registered professional engineer in Indiana, was issued multiple patents and was a dedicated member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In 2000, Walter and his wife moved to Maine to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He was a great husband, father and grandfather and a brilliant engineer who continued in his last years working on engineering design and repair projects for loved ones. Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Ann Mansfield; his sister, Lois E. Mansfield of Pittsburgh; three children, Lois A. Mansfield of Plano, Texas, Dr. Carol Mansfield of Manchester and Dr. John Mansfield of Berlin, Mass. Grandchildren include Isabel and Toby Smith, and Thomas, Kathryn and Leesa Mansfield. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a celebration of Cal's life will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Raymond Anderson officiating. Burial will take place at Grandview Cemetery in Johnstown, in the spring of 2006.
