Manchester - Walter Frank Mooers, Sr., age 76 of Myrtle Street, died Sunday June 17, 2007 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous fight with cancer. He was born in Gardiner on February 22, 1931, the son of the late Walter Franklin Mooers and Edith Leighton Mooers. He attended schools in Gardiner and graduated from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield in 1950. Mr. Mooers worked for Staples Oil, Holmes and Swift and was a supervisor for the State of Maine Highway Garage for over twenty nine years, from which he retired in 1991. After retiring, Walter kept very busy building and creating crafts for his wife to paint for craft shows and he was always willing to assist anyone that called for help. He enjoyed traveling to Europe and Hawaii and especially the many gatherings of MCI classmates. Walter and Catherine enjoyed several months over the eleven years of Florida sunshine and made many lasting friendships in Terrace Park, Zephyrhills, FL. His family, church and friends were of the highest importance. Mr. Mooers retired as a Staff Sgt. from the United States Army in 1991 after serving 29 years as a member of the Newport Army National Guard and the Gardiner Army National Guard, 112th Aviation Company. He served during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. He was a member of the Manchester Community Church for over 40 years where he served as Trustee, Deacon, President of the Adult Club and on many other committees. He was the recipient of the Churchmanship Award in 1993. He gave freely of his time and talent as a carpenter and fixer-upper at the church. He was most proud of the shirt presented to him by the church which said, ?He Came, He Sawed, He Fixed It?. He served as Boy Scout Leader and was a member of the Manchester Lions Club for many years, serving as Secretary and King Lion. He was also a member of the Pittsfield Grange and was a 32nd Degree Mason, Hallowell Chapter. He was predeceased by his sisters, Eleanor Hersom, Dorothy Sawyer, Alice Pushard and Clara Jane Poulin and a granddaughter Kristen Mooers. Surviving is his beloved wife of 54 years, Catherine Doyle Mooers of Manchester; one son Walter F. Mooers Jr. and his wife Jean of Winthrop; a daughter Deborah L. Violette and her husband Michael of Sidney; his grandchildren, Justin Mooers and his companion Lisa Dickinson, and Ryan Mooers all of Winthrop; Tanya L. Violette and her companion Chris Jones of Farmingdale and Steven Violette of Sidney; two great grandchildren Brenna-Marie Mooers and Kyle Walker and was looking forward to the birth of his third great-grandchild Brayden Walter; one brother Richard L. Mooers and his wife Lucy of Waterville and many nieces and nephews who have been very special to him during his lifetime. A graveside committal will be held at 12 noon on Friday June 22, in the Manchester Forks Cemetery, followed by a celebration of Walter?s life at 1:00pm at the Manchester Community Church. The Rev?s Ernest B. Johnson, Jr. and Arthur Johnson, Pastor of the Riverview Congregational Church, South Gardiner, will officiate.
