CHELSEA - Warren H. Lenfest, 87, of Chelsea died peacefully at Maine Veterans' Home, Augusta, on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. He was born in Washington on Lenfest Mountain, Jan. 8, 1921, the son of Harry M. Lenfest and Alice (Turner) Lenfest. He was educated in local schools and worked on local farms until his enlistment into military service on Oct. 14, 1942. He served with the U.S. Army 83rd 'Thunderbolt' Division, 329th Regiment, Co A-Infantry, with the rank of private first class. His battle campaigns included Normandy, northern France, Rhineland and central Europe, including France, Luxembourg, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Czechoslovakia, for more than three years. He was twice awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. Among various citations and decorations, he was most proud of the recent Silver Star Honorable Service Medal awarded to him by the people of the state of Maine. He worked most of his life as an automobile technician at local dealerships until his retirement. He was a member of the National Association of Federal Retired Employees, the Chelsea Grange and the Boynton-Webber Post Veterans of Foreign Wars in Washington. Warren enjoyed maintaining his farm and tinkering on equipment, as well as visiting with family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Frances M. (Tibbetts); and seven siblings, brothers Freddie, Archie and Elbridge Lenfest, and sisters Doris Gates, Esther Peabody, Ruth Hovey and Irene Hunter. He is survived by four children, Peter W. Lenfest and his wife, Darlene, of Windsor, John W. Nored and his wife, Anita, of Windsor, Paul H. Lenfest and his wife, Charlotte, of Upton, Mass., and Sara F. Reed and her companion, Auddy Mayeu, of Iverness, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A committal service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Father LeClair Chapel of the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Warren's memory to the charity of your choice.
