Obituary

AUGUSTA ? Wayne Floyd Apgar, 66, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Phillipsburg, N.J., Oct. 28, 1935, the son of Floyd and Blanche (Renner) Apgar. Wayne graduated from North Hunterdon Regional High School in Annandale, N.J. From 1953-1968, he worked in West Portal, N.J. in the family business, Apgar's Feed Service. In 1968, he went to work for Agway, where he was employed at various locations in New Jersey and Maine. He drove for Hammond Lumber for 15 years, from 1982 until his retirement in 1997. Wayne was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Tall Cedars of Lebanon, N.J. For a period of time, he was commonly referred to as the 'Candle Man' from doing the Luminarias in the Augusta-Mayfair area. He liked playing cards and bowling, but most of all enjoyed being an excellent husband, father and grandfather. Wayne is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandra Apgar of Augusta; his son, Brian Apgar and his wife, Karen, of Eugene, Ore.; his sister, Linda Apgar Bachman, of Sarasota, Fla.; his two granddaughters, Sophie and Emma Apgar of Eugene; his nephew, Kenneth Bachman of Sarasota; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. John Pokrifka and the Rev.Lawrence Wiles officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Bloomsbury, N.J. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made either to the First Congregational Church of Pittston, c/o Jeanne Hoyle, RR 2 Box 8015, Warren Rd., Pittston 04345, or to the Belgrade Bible Church, P.O. Box 412, Belgrade 04917.
