William A Doherty, 80, passed away July 23, 2023 at home after a long illness with his wife Dottie and granddaughter Elizabeth by his side. William was born on January 14, 1943 in Saugus, Massachusetts to Margaret Morrison Doherty and Arthur Doherty. After graduating from Saugus High School, Saugus, Massachusetts, Bill entered the Army. He loved his country and was very proud to serve. After his tour in the Army, he settled in Maine and got a job at Bath Iron Works. He worked as hull manager, and ship superintendent, and received many awards for working hard to get ships out on schedule. It was amazing how many people in the yard and on the Navy ships he knew by first name. Bill supervised many crews on and off-site jobs for the company. Bill traveled to California, Washington state, Hawaii and Florida where he lived for a few years. For stress relief he would run till his knee gave out. After being on call for 43 years, in retirement he enjoyed his pool, hot tub, camping, hunting, and kayaking. Most of all Bill was devoted to his Episcopalian church, the Red Sox, and the New England Patriots. Bill is predeceased by his parents, his brother, Arthur, his sister, Judith Doherty Potter Wallace and one son Daniel Doherty and stepson, Jeffrey J. Poland. Bill is survived by his wife of 40 years Dottie Doherty of Belgrade, sister, Linda Doherty Saporito of Massachusetts, brother, Robert Doherty of New Hampshire, son, William Doherty Jr. of Topsham, Me., and stepdaughter Michelle Doherty of Anchorage, AK., and 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Jason, Kayla, Daniela and Donovan.
