Winthrop – William “Bill” Page Maxim, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Marshwood Center, Lewiston, after a brief illness. William was born on May 31, 1923 in Winthrop, the son of Nelson and Abbigail (Allen) Maxim. He attended school in Winthrop and after high school went to the National Youth Associates Boatbuilding School in Biddeford, Maine. In 1943, he went to work at the Bath Iron Works facility in South Portland. Bill was drafted into the service, joining the Air Force as a flight engineer as one of the first 19-year-old group of draftees. He was discharged in February of 1946. He met Norma Dudley shortly after being discharged from the service. They were married on June 29th, 1946. They raised three children; Kenneth, Everett and Faye. Bill owned an interior and exterior painting business for over 40 years. He also served as rural carrier for 19 years before retiring in 1987. That same year, he was recognized as the Outstanding Rural Carrier of Maine. Bill was a member of the Winthrop Congregational Church, a member of the Winthrop Grange for over fifty years, and a member and past president of the Hillandalers Snowmobile Club, one of Bill’s passions. He also belonged to the Alfred Maxwell Jr. American Legion Post 40 and the V.F.W. He was a Past Grand and District Deputy of the Crystal Lodge IOOF of Winthrop. Bill also enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting and snowmobiling being some of his favorite activities as well as spending time at the family camp on Androscoggin Lake. He could also be found taking in the horse and ox-pulling at many of the state agricultural fairs. In June of 2017, Bill had the pleasure of attending Honor Flight Maine in Washington, DC with his program guardian, Peter Bohman. Bill was predeceased by his parents; his wife Norma; daughter Faye; his brothers Ambrose, John, and Ola. Survivors include his two sons; Kenneth and wife, Donna of Edgecomb; Everett and his wife, Terri, of Readfield; Grandchildren include Michael Maxim; Brian and Matthew Saunders; Paige, Sarah, Katie, Emily, Desiray, Nicholas, Bryton, Abbigail, and Allie Jo Maxim; also several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting will be held on Thursday, January 18 from 2-4 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop, where a celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Friday at 11:00. Spring burial with military honors will be in Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions to Honor Flight Maine, P.O. Box 1770, Portland 04104.
