WHITEFIELD - William Harrison Sherman, 66, of Whitefield passed away Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital at Togus after a prolonged illness.
He was born in Augusta on Feb. 19, 1943, the son of Dr. William H. and Bernadette (Cote) Sherman. He was educated in Augusta schools and the Kents Hill School. He served three years in the Army, most of it in Germany.
From his boyhood, Bill's ambition was to drive big trucks and operate heavy equipment. For many years, he was able to do this. He was most recently employed by Williams Construction Company, of Farmingdale, and Frank Monroe Construction Company, of Whitefield.
Bill was especially fond of cats and he relished conducting lengthy conversations with his sister's talkative Siamese. Above all, Bill loved tending to his flower garden, moseying around greenhouses for the sheer pleasure of it, and taking care of his extensive and ever-growing collection of varied houseplants.
He is survived by a sister, Sylvia Sherman, of Augusta; a son, Dale and a daughter, Lisa, both of Minnesota; stepdaughters, Holly Cummings, of Sidney, and Tammy Jeannotte and her daughter, Stacy, of Windsor; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was deeply grateful to Holly for her loving care and help during his last years.
Relatives and friends may visit 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church St., Augusta. A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. A committal service will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
Memorial donations may be made to The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 1332 North Halsted Street No. 201, Chicago, IL 60642; or to PALS Animal Shelter, 188 Case Road, East Winthrop, ME 04343.
