WINTHROP ~ William (Bill) Robert Wing, 79, aka ‘BaPoo” died peacefully at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta, on December 29, 2016. Bill was born on May 15, 1937 in Readfield, Maine and moved to Winthrop a few years later with his Mom, Elinor who married Ulmont Wing and they lived in the home on Maranacook Lake where Bill and Joan eventually made their home. Bill entered the US Air Force in 1954 after graduating from Winthrop High School and served 4 years. He returned to Winthrop to work at Key Bank as a teller and then on to Carleton Woolen Mills where he worked in the dye room for a short time until Central Maine Power hired him to work in their computer/control room and eventually worked his way up to the Real Estate Department traveling throughout Maine evaluating CMP’s leased properties---often with a fly rod in tow! He then transferred to Union Water Company, a subsidiary of CMP, as their property Agent where he retired in 1995 with more than 31 years combined service at CMP/Union Water Power Co, Bill was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting and cherished time spent in the Maine woods with friends and family. He had the great privilege of spending his entire life residing and playing on Maranacook Lake where he enjoyed boating with family and friends, BBQs and parties too many to count, fishing with his son and grandkids, giving tours around the lake in his party barge pointing out the eagles’ and ospreys’ nests; counting loons, or having a cocktail watching the gorgeous sunsets from his front lawn. For more than 25 years he and friends would maintain an Olympic sized ice skating rink on the lake in front of the house in anticipation of the annual Wing’s Winter Wonderland. Bill and Joan would invite 100+ friends from aged 3 days to 92 to enjoy the day of recreating on the lake. Bill was a legendary grill master and on those days he would grill over 150 hot dogs overlooking the lake full of folks skating, skiing, fishing, playing egg toss and drinking beer from the keg stuck in the snowbank. Meanwhile board games and cribbage tournaments were played inside, and the soups Joan made were enjoyed with plenty of other snacks and desserts. One other job Bill held for 25 years employed him only one day per year---he was Santa in the Winthrop Holiday Parade and took this job very seriously. He loved the chats he had with the children and would always be careful about ‘promising’ to grant their wishes. Bill was a skilled storyteller. Most of his stories included hunting, fishing or other good times with friends and they held the listener’s attention with wit, humor and impeccable timing! Bill loved his community of Winthrop and donated many hours of his life serving as a Selectman, as a member of the Lions Club, committee member of the Maranacook Lake Association, and he worked diligently with Joan on the C.M. Bailey Library Capital Campaign helping to raise over 1 million dollars. His most recent volunteer time was spent with the Dam Committee where his knowledge and history of Lake Maranacook was invaluable to the progress that has been made. Bill was predeceased by his parents, sister Helen Wing and paternal grandparents, Lloyd and Elva Leighton. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Joan, aka ‘GeeGee’, daughter Robin Struck and her partner Bill Van Horn, son Michael and his wife Diane, 2 grandchildren who he cherished, Zak and Morgan, AFS son Brett Wallace and his wife, Kathryn, and their children Taylor and Baxter, his sister Gail Marr, brother Monty Wing and his partner Chuck Peel, brother Alan Wing and his wife, Eleanor, sister Julia Milliken and her husband Drew, brother Jonathan Pyska and his wife Kathy, brother Jeffrey Pyska, brother-in-law Ronnie Lapointe and his wife Linda, all the Gliems in PA, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and Suzie Wallace and the Kirkhams from New Zealand. Bill is also survived by David Struck and his beloved, gentle, loving golden retriever, Tanner, who David generously shared. Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 3rd at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. Bill’s life will be celebrated in a mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4th at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Route 133, Winthrop, with Rev. Frank Morin, Celebrant. Committal services with full military honors will be in Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane, Winthrop, in the spring at a date and time to be announced.
