Winnifred
Folger
Jul 4, 1934 — Aug 12, 2013
WINTHROP -- Winnifred Norma (Baker) 'Winnie' Folger, 79, took the hand of her Lord and Savior on Monday, Aug. 12, at Winthrop Manor in Winthrop, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Augusta on July 4, 1934, the daughter of Francis and Edna (Frost) Baker. She graduated from Cony High School, class of 1952. She was a lifelong member of the Augusta First Church of the Nazarene. After high school graduation, Winnie was employed by the Maine Sardine Industry, Hallowell Shoe Co., and Bates Manufacturing Co. In the early 1970s, she was employed by the Department of Motor Vehicles in the examination section. On Jan. 8, 1955, Winnie married her sweetheart, Leon F. Folger. Her greatest position in life was that of mother and homemaker. The love of her family was her biggest joy. Winnie was known for her wonderful cooking and love of recipes and cookbooks, making the kitchen her favorite room. During the summer she loved cookouts at 'The Farm,' where she happily grilled her favorite foods (including the famous Winnie's Wieners) and her grateful family and friends always overindulged. Winnie was also an avid 'saler' ... lawn saler. She looked forward to weekends and setting 'sale' to numerous neighborhoods. Winnie enjoyed camping and taking pleasure in the peace and beauty of God's Great Creation. Winnie was a skilled seamstress and lovingly sewed clothing for her three children. She was a very sociable person and a positive thinker, enjoying family gatherings and even making her 41/2 years of dialysis a social event. Winnie is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leon F. Folger; her three children, David and wife Cathy, of Pittston, Jeffrey and wife Jayne, of Sidney, and Rebecca (Folger) Hamilton, of Sidney; one grandson (the love of her life and her ray of sunshine), Wesley Hamilton, of Sidney; one sister, Barbara (Baker) Stevens, of Sidney; and two brothers, John, and wife Sally, of Crawford, and Robert and wife Terry, of Rygate, Vt. Winnie is survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is also survived by a dear friend of 75 years, Carolyn (Ward) Tozier, of Hallowell, who was like a sister to her. She was predeceased by one sister, Mary Ann (Baker) Emery, of Augusta; and another dear friend since childhood, Mary Jo (Doyle) Stafford. The family would like to thank the Kennebec Kidney Center for their special care and treatment of Winnie over the last 41/2 years. They would also like to thank the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care and Winthrop Manor for their care and kindness. Friends and relatives may visit at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, at the Augusta First Church of the Nazarene, 30 Nazarene Drive (off the Old Winthrop Road) in Augusta, with a celebration of life at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Augusta First Church of the Nazarene, 30 Nazarene Drive, Augusta. Arrangements by Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta. Memories, condolences, photos and videos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at www.khrfuneralhomes.com.
