Obituary

Winton P. Fournier 1923-2002 FARMINGDALE ? Winton P. 'Wimpy' Fournier, 79, died peacefully Sunday, Oct. 13, 2002, at his home at 31 Grant Street. He was born April 18, 1923 in Rumford, the son of Alcide and Hazel (Maxim) Fournier. The family moved to Wayne when he was 6 weeks old. That farm home was destroyed by fire in the early 1930s, and the family relocated to Winthrop. A graduate of Winthrop High School, he entered the service in February 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific until his honorable discharge in January 1946. After the service, he attended Southern Maine Vocational School under the GI Bill. He trained to be a TV repairman. He owned Fournier's TV Sales & Service in Winthrop for about 25 years, until the business was ruined by fire in the late 1970s. He was a member of North Manchester Old Meeting House Church, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Winthrop, and the Kennebec Valley Computer Society. On Thanksgiving Day, 1997, at the home of longtime best friends, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Yeaton of Belgrade, he became reunited with a sweetheart from long ago (1946) who he had not seen for more than half a century, Callie (Tarr) Lachapelle, Mrs. Yeaton's twin sister. What was not meant to be in 1946 came to pass in 1998. He and Callie were married July 24, 1998. Others he left behind include his stepchildren, Nora (Lachapelle) Cole, of San Diego, Calif., Ron Lachapelle of Manchester, Mary Lachapelle of Seattle, Wash., John Lachapelle of Farmingdale, Carl Lachapelle of Mebane, N.C.; his sister, Evelyn Ward of Augusta; his nephews, Lynn Fournier of Old Orchard Beach, Fred Fournier of Hampton, N.H., and Phillip Fournier of Augusta; his nieces, Judy (Ward) Hubbard of Kennesaw, Ga., and Paulette (Fournier) Day of Sanford; three grandnephews, 10 grandnieces, seven great-grandnephews and six great-grandnieces. His widow, Callie, wishes to thank both families for their unwavering support. Thanks to Carol and Norm of the Togus Oncology Department, to HealthReach nurses Kate and Peggy, HealthReach Home Care aides Donald, Debbie and Nancy, and hospice volunteer Dot Weeks. Thanks also to everyone at C.B. Mattson Co., especially Kathy Gosline, to the Rev. Stan Moody and the church family, and to the ever-wonderful Grant Street neighbors, especially Sandy and Dan. There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Stan Moody. Following the funeral, there will be a committal service at Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane, Winthrop. Honorary bearers will be Carl Yeaton of Belgrade, William Maxim and James Hooker of Winthrop, and Ganny Sciuk of North Monmouth. Active bearers will be Lynn and Fred Fournier, and Ron and John Lachapelle.
